What is the difrence in tone between a viol de gamba family of instruments, and the violin family?
Obiously the viola da gamba family has 6 strings as opposed to 4, ted on frets, and a mainly fourths tuning with a major third in the middle But what are the diffrences in tone? I have heard that the viol family is more nasaly than the violin family, but what I really want, I suppose is a side by side video, or audio comparison. Also, technicaly, the modern double bass is actually very simliar to the members of the viol family, is it not? The only diffrence is the number of strings. Are there any modern compositions that make use of the viol family of instruments?

im talking about violons, violas, cellos, Double basses. I heard that the viola is the hardest.but personally i think its the bass
Why does everyone think Double Bass is part of the Violin family?
In fact its part of the Viol Family. Why do people think its part of the violin family? The Violin family only has Violin, Viola and 'Cello, and the shoulders of a Double Bass are completley differnt. Why does everyone think there in the same family?
Learning the Violin Family?
I've recently been interested in playing bowed instruments. I was planning on learning the violin, viola, cello, and double bass.The problem is I don't want to bite off more than I can chew I figured that because these instruments aren't totally different from what little I know , learning one would greatly help me in playing the other, but I could be wrong. Does this sound like a bad idea? How long do you think it would take an estimate to play all these instruments decently?Also, I'm not new to the music world, I've been playing guitar for around 4 years or so
