Should I buy a violin outfit or just the instrument itself?
Hi, I'm going down to Bethesda to Potter's violin shop this Saturday with my family to purchase a new violin. I'm a junior in high school and I have been playing since 6th grade. I take private lessons, was in school orchestra since 6th grade, and I was fourth chair of the 1st violins this past year in my local youth orchestra. My private teacher has continually urged me to buy a new violin because mine is a relatively mediocre student violin. I must admit, I do want to play better, with a nice sound myself... However, due to class scheduling conflicts I've had to drop orchestra as a course for the rest of high school. Because I'm not in orchestra anymore I won't be eligible to participate in the annual All county orchestra festival, which I have been a part of since 6th grade as well. I am not planning on majoring in music in college, or just pursuing a music career. My teacher says I have a lot of potential and that one of the steps towards becoming a better player is by buying a new violin. She said she wanted me to buy one hopefully in the $2,000 range. This is a very large amount of money for my family as money has always been tight for us. But, my parents have decided to buy me a violin in this price range. I feel really guilty though, especially since I am not pursuing a musical career or anything, and I feel like I'm just buying a new violin because I just want it. My brother is also purchasing a new cello this coming Christmas so that also adds to the financial burden. I went on Potter's website and saw that the have whole violin outfits for about 2 grand, but they also have really nice looking vintage violins for about the same price. I currently have a hard case but one of the latches is starting to act weird, and I have two bows, one which I got about 4 months ago, and one that I've had since I started playing that needs some serious re hairing. The outfit comes with a bow as well, so would it be more economically smart for me to get the outfit? Or should I spend all my money on a good quality instrument? I'm worried if I buy the outfit, the violin itself will not be as good as one of the ones I could've gotten for the same price. I'd rather have a really nice violin then an okay violin with all the extra stuff that comes with it. What should I do?Thank you
Thoughts on the Doreli Model 79 Violin Outfit?
musiciansfriend.com prod...I've been looking at different violin outfits for beginners with tight budgets, and this was one that caught my eye. I'd like to hear reviews of this violin outfit from owners, but even if you've only just looked at it, I'd still like to hear your thoughts on it.And if you have a different violin, I'd like to hear your opinion of it. What model is it? Where did you get it? How much did it cost? What do you like, and don't like, about it? Any insight at all is very appreciated, as I'm still browsing. Thanks Sorry guys here's the link musiciansfriend.com product Doreli Model 79 Violin Outfit?sku 470291
